How to Obtain Access to UB Information

Published January 31, 2024

Most users find their needs are met by the centrally developed products delivered by SIRI, Dash of Dashes and the Factbook.  The advantage of these systems is that they deliver consistent and authoritative summary information to their publics without requiring users to know details about the underlying data or the processes by which they are created.

The campus preference is to have users access university data via the centrally developed sources:

SIRI System  (Business, Financial, Human Resources, etc)  (Business, Financial, Human Resources, etc)
Decision Support Navigation Page (Student-Focused on Enrollment Management)
Data Cookbook (Official definitions associated with campus information elements)
University Factbook (Official student, employment, and related institutional data)  (Many University Facts)
InfoSource (Operational data requiring extensive technical expertise to access and process)

Users requesting Infosource access are often technical staff tasked with developing specific applications requiring access to foundational detail upon which the summaries are based.

What do I Need to Know to Start?

The primary ingredients involved with requesting access to UB data are:

  • Completion of UB’s mandatory - Handling Data Safely course
  • Information to be accessed (ex. student, financial, human resources)
  • Reason for access
  • Name, title, telephone # and email of both you and your supervisor, as well as your UBIT ID

See data access background for additional details.

What's the Process?

Obtaining access to the data can potentially be multi-step process.  The core components are as follows:

Your first stop will be the “Handling Data Safely” course if you have not already done so.

If you need access to SIRI please visit these links:

  • Human Resources

If you need access to HUB student information please visit this link:

Each link identifies specific elements required for data stewards/trustees to evaluate your request along with an address to forward the completed request.

If you require access to the Dash of Dashboards and you are a new user, please send an email containing name, unit, title, UBIT name and list of requested dashboards to PROV_OIA_InstitutionalAnalytics@ubitmail.buffalo.edu

If you are a current user, click on logo at foot of Dash of Dashboards for preconfigured email to send to the analytics team.

University Official Factbook webpage is available publicly on the Provost website.   It is typically updated a few weeks after the third week of class.

Please use your UBIT name and password to access the .

If you require access to Infosource please forward a request to the appropriate data steward/trustee.

Who Grants Access?

Your access to campus information will be determined by the specific trustee and/or steward associated with the data you’d like to obtain.  Bear in mind the Â鶹´«Ã½o is the owner of all university data, and these individuals simply maintain the security of information entrusted to them per the Data Governance effort.

See Data Trustee and Steward Roles along with other definitions relating to data access.

Specific campus individuals assigned data trustee and steward roles.
