Waste Audit

Want to reduce the amount of waste headed to the landfill from our campus? A waste audit conducted by our SSIT will help assess your office’s waste behavior. You will work with your custodial team to halt garbage and recyclable pick up for one week; then, our team will come in and sort your trash (in Tyvek suits and protective gear because, well, gross!). We will generate a report and recommendations on how to improve. After six months, we will follow up with a post-assessment to see if any improvements were made.

Responsibilities of Requestor: Must work with custodial staff so as not to collect waste for one week.

Time commitment: 1 week for garbage collection for initial assessment, one week for garbage collection six months later for post-assessment

Advanced notice needed: 2 weeks

Hired Pop-Up

Host Your Own Fashion Boutique! Let us help you organize a small sampling of what Hired, our professional clothing boutique, has to offer for the students in your department.

Hired is a resource for students on campus who are seeking a professional outfit for networking, job interviews, or transitioning their gender. Each semester, a student can pick out one complete outfit for free. The permanent location is in the Sustainability Center, but our SSIT team can host a pop-up boutique for your club’s events or for students in your department, offering a taste of the materials we have.

Responsibilities of the Requestee: Coordination with the SSIT to set up and take down the pop-up.

Time Commitment: 1 hour set up, 2-4 hours of store time, 1 hour tear down

Advanced Notice Needed: Two weeks

Energy Audit

How much power is your department using? Are you interested in knowing how much energy your office or lab uses? We can quantify your plug load and work with you to develop ways to make your space more efficient.

Our SSIT members can come to your lab or office to monitor the energy usage of your electronic equipment. Kilowatt monitors will be placed in your outlets and left for a week (or a month) to gather data on how much energy your unit uses. After this, our team will generate a report of recommendations on how to decrease your usage. We will then schedule a follow-up assessment to see if a reduction has occurred.  Please note that this will not account for HVAC systems.

Responsibilities of the Requestee: Ensure that the kilowatt meters are not touched or moved, and complete both a pre-test and a post-test on energy usage.

Time Commitment: 1-4 weeks

Advanced Notice Needed: 2 weeks
