Transgender Inclusion

Updated July 25, 2025

UB is committed to ensuring a welcoming and safe environment for all members of the UB community, including our transgender students, faculty, staff and community members.

New York State law and UB’s Discrimination and Harassment Policy specifically prohibit discrimination based upon gender identity and gender expression. They also require UB to provide accommodations when necessary for the full inclusion and participation of our transgender community.

Accommodations for our transgender community include respecting individuals’ chosen names and pronouns. In accordance with New York State law, our community members also have the right to use restroom and changing facilities that are consistent with their gender identity. A person may choose to use an all gender/single-occupancy facility, or a shared restroom that is consistent with the individual’s gender identity.

Under UB’s Preferred/Chosen Names and Pronouns Policy, students and employees may use a name other than their legal name, and this will be honored except in instances when a legal name is required. UB has modified over 175 systems to date in order to enable the use of a preferred or chosen name, and is in the process of evaluating our remaining systems. We have also developed preferred/chosen name guidance for the campus that explains how preferred/chosen names are incorporated into our systems pertaining to applicants, students and employees. UB also has developed a list of all gender, single-user restrooms with the recognition that a private restroom space is often the most comfortable choice for members of our community.
